Structure Of Hair:
The characteristics of our hair like colour, texture, thickness, type etc are inherited from parents. Hair follicles develop before birth. The average scalp contains 80,000 - 1,20,000 hair follicles. This number is determined genetically and new hair follicles do not form after birth. Hair is an appendage of skin, which arises from within dermis (2nd layer of skin) from a hair follicle. It mainly consists of two parts:
- Hair root (Papilla): - Only live element found deep down the scalp.
- Hair shaft: - Constitutes dead cells and a protein called Keratin.
Hair grows in cycles, which comprises of three stages:
| • Anagen or growing phase | • Catagen or resting phase | • Telogen or falling phase |

The length of the growth phase determines the length of the hair. Life of each hair on an average is 3 years, 4 months. A normal healthy individual has nearly 80 - 120 hairs fall per day. Hair fall is always more when you wash your hair or oil it because this is when most of the hair, which is in the telogen phase, falls off.
If the hair fall is not within the above-mentioned limits then it calls for immediate and appropriate hair care treatments.
